Finding Your Way
Last summer, we learned how to find our way without GPS. We can do this by looking at nature
like stars and plants.
Have you ever gone camping and seen a group of stars in the night sky? Two stars in that group
point to the North Star. People have used the North Star to find their way for a very long time.
In this science project, you will learn if plants like moss can help you find directions. Plants
cannot talk, but they show when seasons change, when there is enough water, or when they are
healthy. Long ago, people watched nature to make calendars and to know when to plant crops or
travel.
Before people had compasses, they used stars and plants to find directions. The most famous star
in the north was the North Star. People found it by looking at a group of stars shaped like a ladle.
Some people even called this star shape the “Drinking Gourd”.
Stars helped people travel at night, but during the day, they needed other clues. The Sun rises in the east and sets in the west. On cloudy days, they used moss. If you watch nature carefully, you can find your way too.
