  • In the early 1900s, many people explored new
    lands. In August 1914, I went to Antarctica with
    28 men. But on January 20, 1915, our ship hit
    thick ice and got stuck . We had to wait for the
    winter to end. Nine months later, the ice started
    melting , but the ship broke into pieces and
    began sinking . By November 21, 1915, the ship
    was gone and we set up a camp on the ice
    .
    My dream of reaching Antarctica was over, but
    I made a new plan to bring my men home safely .
    On April 15, 1916, after 497 days, we reached
    Elephant Island, but we still needed help. I
    decided to sail to South Georgia, and after 16
    days of fighting big waves and strong winds,
    we made it. We got help from South Georgia
    and returned to Elephant Island,
    and everyone was saved .
