According to local traditional beliefs in Zimbabwe, a python is a sacred creature and hunting it may anger the gods to the extent of punishing the whole community by causing severe drought.
This made Enock’s neighbors report him to the police as soon as they found out he had a python skin belt.
Even though it is debatable whether or not this traditional belief is true, it is common among African communities to connect animals with sacred beings that serve as totems.
A totem is an object or animal that has a spiritual significance among a particular society.
In Africa, groups known as clans think their totem is their identity and they protect the animal as members of their own clan because it symbolizes their pride, dignity and unity.
