Cultural Sensitivity in Cross-Cultural Communication
In my sophomore year of high school, I had an awakening experience that revealed my lack of cultural sensitivity, particularly in understanding Western customs as someone from an Eastern background.
This time, it happened during a school event called “Homecoming.”

As the excitement for Homecoming week grew, I couldn’t quite grasp its significance.
To me, it seemed like a week filled with dress-up days and a dance party.
One day, while discussing the Homecoming dance plans with friends, I blurted out, “Why do we need such a big event just to dance and wear fancy clothes?”

My Eastern perspective had trouble comprehending their enthusiasm towards Homecoming.
My friends, who cherished the tradition, looked at me with surprise.
They explained that Homecoming was not just about the dance; it was a celebration of school spirit, alumni connections, and creating lasting memories.

My comment left me feeling embarrassed for not fully respecting their customs.
It served as yet another reminder of the importance of cultural sensitivity and the need to approach Western traditions with an open mind and respect, even when they seem unfamiliar from an Eastern standpoint.

In today’s interconnected world, cultural awareness and sensitivity have become important for everyday interactions with people from diverse backgrounds.
Whether we engage in global travel, work, or study experiences, understanding and respecting cultural differences and similarities is essential.

Language, both verbal and non-verbal, is deeply influenced by culture.
The way people communicate, their body language, and even the meaning of certain words can vary significantly across different cultures.
For instance, a simple word like “yes” can have various connotations in different contexts and cultures, ranging from enthusiastic agreement to cautious consideration.

Cultural differences also extend to conflict resolution and emotional expression.
Some cultures view conflict as a positive means of addressing issues and improving relationships, while others may prefer to avoid conflict situation altogether.
The way emotions are expressed can also vary greatly.
Some cultures value a more reserved approach, but other cultures can be clear in expressing emotions.

Being culturally sensitive means acknowledging these differences without judgment.
Instead, it involves being open to learning and practicing empathy to better understand the perspectives and behaviors of people from various cultural backgrounds.
So, ask yourself how culture shapes our actions and try to see the world by stepping in other’s shoes wherever you go.
Accepting the differences and focusing on the similarities is the key to build healthy relationships.

Cultural Sensitivity in Cross-Cultural Communication
In my sophomore year of high school, I had an awakening experience that revealed my lack of cultural sensitivity, particularly in understanding Western customs as someone from an Eastern background.
This time, it happened during a school event called
“Homecoming.”
