and has changed over time.
In the updated
format, 36 teams compete instead of 32 in a
league-style group stage.
Starting in autumn,
each team plays a set number of matches against
different opponents.

The top 8 teams go straight to the knockout stage, while teams ranked 9th to 24th play in a playoff round for a chance to advance.
The knockout phase playoffs, Round of 16, quarterfinals, and semifinals are played over two legs, with each team playing one match at home and one away.
The tournament ends with a single-match final.
