Holmes explained the third message,
“It contained a five-letter word
beginning and ending in E, with three letters in between.
I thought it
must be ‘ELSIE.’
That gave me the symbols for L, S, and I.
The word
before ‘Elsie’ had four letters, ending in the letter ‘E.’
I figured out that
the word must be ‘COME.’”

Holmes figured out that the first letter of the first message had to be
A, and the H was relatively easy to decode.
It becomes, “AM HERE
A☐E SLANE☐.”
By filling in the blanks in the name, the message
read, “Am Here. Abe Slaney!”
Holmes proceeded to decode the second
message as “At Elrige’s.”
I thought it must be ‘ELSIE.’

must는 추측을 나타내는 조동사로, must be는 ‘~임에 틀림없다’와 같이 강한 확신에 가까운 추측을 의미한다.

So, sleep is highly critical, given that it’s when your brain forms memories, ~.

highly는 ‘매우’라는 뜻의 부사이며 critical을 꾸며 준다. <given that +주어+동사>는 ‘…라는 사실을 고려하면’이라는 의미로 considering that으로도 바꾸어 쓸 수 있다. when은 시간을 나타내는 관계부사로 it’s와 when 사이에 the time이 생략되었다.

The divers held them close and were guided through the darkness by dive lines.

them은 앞 문장의 the boys를 가리키는 말이며, 병렬 접속사 and 뒤에는 문장의 주어 the divers가 생략되었다. 이들은 dive lines(잠수 라인)에 의해 어둠 속을 헤쳐 갈 수 있도록 안내되었으므로 수동형 동사 were guided가 쓰였다.

After the flooded section, the boys were either carried on special beds or lifted up along ropes.

상관접속사 either A or B 사이에 수동형 동사구 (were) carried on special beds와 (were) lifted up along ropes가 병렬 구조로 연결되었다.

Reading Strategy

Identify the sequence of events from July 8th to 10th, leading up to the completion of the rescue operation.
However, simply pumping out the water was not enough. The forecast predicted heavy rains in the coming days, putting the rescuers on high alert. Thus, a final but risky decision was made to take the “Wild Boars” out of the cave in groups of three or four boys at a time. the boys and their coach went deeper and deeper into the cave, ending up in a chamber about 4 km from the entrance to the cave.

On July 8th, the mission took off. To prevent panic in the tight, underwater passages, the boys were fitted with full-face breathing masks. The divers held them close and were guided through the darkness by dive lines. After the flooded section, the boys were either carried on special beds or lifted up along ropes. After a long, nerve-wracking 11 hours, the rescue team successfully emerged with the first four boys. Four more boys were rescued the following day.

Finally, on July 10th, the last four boys and the coach were brought to safety. The world rejoiced at their rescue, and the boys and their coach were immediately transported to a hospital, where they were kept separated from others to prevent any potential infections. Once the doctors confirmed their good health, the boys were able to return home and reunite with their families.
