Our hike took a
dangerous turn at one
point.

As we made our way down a
trail, we encountered a black bear.

I was so
excited that I took out my camera to take a picture.

It must have
smelled the cold cuts and chips we had packed because it began to
approach us.

Thinking quickly, Uncle Roy grabbed a stone and threw
it, yelling and waving.

After turning me around, Dan helped Uncle
Roy push me back the way we came.

Dan said, “I guess it’s time to
leave now.”

That wasn’t a problem because I had gotten my picture!

접속사 As는 ‘~하다가, ~하는 중에’라는 의미로 쓰였다.

<make one’s way>는 ‘나아가다, 가다’라는 뜻이다.

<must have + p.p.>는 ‘~했음에 틀림없다’라는 뜻으로, must have smelled는 '냄새를 맡았음에 틀림없다'로 해석할 수 있다.

곰이 일행에게 접근한 시점보다 짐을 싼 시점이 더 과거이므로(대과거), 이를 나타내기 위해 과거완료(had + p.p.)인 had packed가 쓰였다.

After turning me around, Dan helped Uncle Roy push me back the way we came.

After turning은 After he turned로 바꿔 쓸 수 있다.

<help + O +(to) V>는 ‘⋯가 ~하도록 돕다’라는 뜻이다.

That wasn’t a problem because I had gotten my picture!

문제가 되지 않았다고 생각한 주절의 시점보다 종속절의 사진을 찍은 시점이 더 과거이므로(대과거), 이를 나타내기 위해 과거완료(had + p.p.)인 had gotten이 쓰였다.
