The actual price was fifty cents a yard, as Mr. Levering had told her earlier, but she misunderstood him.
When the lady assumed that it was fifty-five cents per yard, he immediately said, “Yes, it is.”

he deserved it은 believed의 목적어인 명사절로, 앞에 명사절 접속사 that이 생략되었다.
it은 앞의 this reputation을 지칭한다.
