What is it?
Frequency illusion
is
a cognitive bias in which a person becomes
more aware of a newly learned concept after encountering it
.
How does it work?
In experiments illustrating the phenomenon,
participants learn a
new word “hangry.”
After doing so, they start to notice the word
everywhere.
But it’s not that “hangry” is more common; it’s just
that their brains are paying extra attention to it now.
Why is it important?
What frequency illusion shows
is that
our perception is influenced
by our previous experiences
.
We can use this knowledge to
become more mindful of the way our biases shape our reality.
